Imagery part 2

Pattern: The pattern in an area rug is relaxing.

Non-pattern: All of the pieces of stained glass that make up this candle holder are similar in size, but not identical or orderly.

Movement: The arrows on the lock indicate that it can be turned either way. This lock was on the dock at a park.

Movement/direction: The water in the lake moves in one direction, but its hard to make out from the picture.

Contrast: The black holes against the stark white cutout is striking. I've always liked decorative vents.
Isolation: The first picture is isolated from the other two.

Placement: The placement of objects either unifies them by grouping them together or separates them by pushing them apart.

Absence: Something's missing!

Balance in Action

1. Contrast: The contrast occurs between the white and tan fencing. This picture is from the balcony of an apartmen complex. I would love to live right in the middle of Raleigh, because the view is fantastic! I wonder if any of them are for sale?

2. Internal (Object to Picture plane): Only with the book behind it would the viewer be able to determine that the glass is miniature. The candy canes are made out of sculpey.

3. Context: This sign could be a variety of sizes, but with the pieces of grass we're able to tell that it is near to the ground and quite small. This picture is from the base of a lampost at the capital.

4. Human Reference :The people walking by this building bring its size into perspective. This walkway between the two museums is surprisingly empty in the morning.

5. Asymmetry: The white sculpture is asymmetrical. Each side has a differently shaped pillar. I remember the waterworks exhibits from this area when it was Exploris.

6. Figure-ground: This sign has a figure-ground relationship which is easily discernible by the white against the blue. Are you lost? It's easy to navigate down town Raleigh once you get acclimated to it.

7. Radial symmetry :This shape has radial symmetry because it can be rotated around a radius.

Yes, the gate is merely ornamental.

8. Bilateral symmetry :This vent has bilateral symmetery because it can be evenly split down the center. I love the victorian styled houses like this one.

The Evolution of Corporate Logos

Logos logos, there are so many of them, but where did they originate from? These corporations were all once small and also faced similarily uncertain futures. As their fame increased so did their visual representation. Watch below how the corporate logos transform from drab and obscure to clean cut and iconic.

Even Wal-mart was once nearly indistinguishable from any other logo.

Apple made the transformation from ornate to technocentric.

There are plenty of resources where various logos can be found, but not all of them have such a complete history. I enjoy looking at some of the older logos from some very successful corporations. Shell happens to have ten incarnations.

1. The first logo is almost unrecognizable at first. Is it a plate? A UFO?

2. Is this a picture from a biology textbook? For a company in the 1900's this design might have been permissable, but by today's standards it's just not enough of an icon.

3. The darkness of the logo is slowly peeling away. The absence of a black background separates the picture from anything else and it has truly become a logo and not a photograph.

4. The 1930's rendition looks exactly like an airfreshner in my opinion. The lines are clean, and the form has become less realistic and more of an icon instead of an illustration. Perhaps a logo need not look like a photo copy.

5. This design is perhaps my least favorite out of all of them. The white letters plopped on top of a yellow and red shell is as tacky as can be. This design appears as if it toke three mintues in MS Paint! It's obvious that the shell is in fact a shell, therefore the letters on top of it are superfluous.

6. The logo takes a leap into the creative realm when it loses its realistic grooves to simplistic red lines. The change is effective, because now the shell is truly a drawing and no longer a photograph.
